Weekly Update, Nov. 22, 2013: Humanity First (HF) disaster response team has established its command center in Roxas City in the Visayas Province. HF is closely coordinating its efforts with several UN agencies including UNICEF, OCHA, the UN Clusters, as well as other organizations including local and provincial governments. HF is now playing an important role in aid delivery in the Western Visayas regions. Community Water Purification Systems: To date, Humanity First has installed four (4) Community Water Purification Systems: two (2) in the province of Capiz; one (1) in the province of Iloilo; and one (1) in Olotayan Island near Roxas City. Each unit has the capacity to deliver 5,000 liters of clean drinking water per day, enough for 1600 people. Temporary Learning Spaces: Delivery of aid to stranded populations: During one of the assessment missions, the HF team identified Barangay Island which is a community of 1,400 people and had not received any aid. All of the 159 homes on Barangay Island were destroyed and the population was stranded without access to food and water. HF and Canadian military using helicopters delivered food and water to the island organized mobile medical clinics. Establishment of Shelters: HF has started building shelters with locally procured materials. Initially we built 10 shelters as a pilot project and they were very appreciated by the local community and aid agencies as they are more durable compared to tents and much cheaper. HF is aiming to build up to 300 shelters depending on availability of funds.
